This memorial website was created in the memory of my beloved brother DANNY SCOTT who was born in Redhill, Surrey on Tuesday 23rd September 1986 and passed away on Tuesday 17th August 2004 at the age of 17, following a nine-month fight against a rare childhood cancer. Danny was my 'baby' brother, but physically he was very tall and well-built! He was always the life and soul of any party, and he loved to hold 'gatherings' in our converted garage or in the summer, in the field behind our house. He was an active person; in his short life he'd mastered rugby, ice hockey, BMXing, skiing and his absolute passion - snowboarding. Danny attended Lingfield Primary School and Oxted School, where he made many friends. However he was only really close to one, Dave, whom he loved like a brother. They did everything together; Dave seemed to live at our house most of the time and Mum and Dad called him their second son. Like most siblings, Dan and I fought when we were young, but as we grew into our teens, we became good friends, and we had many friends in common. Before Danny become ill, he and I talked about taking a year out and going to France to train as ski and snowboard instructors. His favourite places to snowboard were Lake Tahoe in the USA and Val d'Isere in France. Danny was diagnosed with Stage 4 alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in November 2003. He wouldn't allow his treatment or its side effects to interfere with his social life, and he carried on as best he could, although he did have to leave school (no hardship for Dan, though!). His motto was 'Keep It Positive', which we all upheld, right to the end. Danny passed away peacefully at home with his Dad and Dave right by his side. We all miss him so much, a great big hole has been left in our little family.

Helping Adolescents at the Marsden (H.A.M.) www.h-a-m.co.uk
Danny's cancer was a rare cancer normally only seen in children under ten years old. Because of this, he needed to be treated by the oncology team in the children's unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton, Surrey. Unfortunately, this unit did not really cater for teenagers and young adults, and whilst Danny was in hospital he learnt that the Teenage Cancer Trust was in talks with the Marsden to build a unit specifically designed for young people aged 14-25. He said that he'd love to raise money to get a pool table for this new unit. So, a group of local friends and their families got together to raise money to buy a pool table for the new TCT unit when it was built. They called themselves the H.A.M. Fundraisers, and started off with a sponsored 16-mile cycle ride. This raised about £2,000. Dan was thrilled at the thought of having a fab pool table at the hospital. The next fundraising effort was a ball in September 2004, but Dan passed away the month before, and the speech he'd planned to make at this ball was given by his sister Jenna. H.A.M. raised about £20,000 on this night alone! Now we're looking at more than a pool table for the youngsters in the hospital! At the end of January 2005 H.A.M. learnt that the Royal Marsden will be having a TCT unit at their Sutton site, but a number of hurdles still have to be overcome before the go-ahead can be given, but when it is, this will take about 18 months to build. In the meantime, H.A.M. has paid for the refurbishment of the tiny adolescent room which is currently in the children's unit for use by the over 12's. In addition H.A.M. have bought new flat screen TVs with DVD players and portable Playstations for the patients in the High Dependency Unit in the Royal Marsden in London and digital radios for the Robert Tiffany ward in the Royal Marsden Sutton. By the time the TCT unit is built, H.A.M. will have held more balls, and thanks to the many donations and fundraising efforts made by Dan's many many friends, we hope to be able to provide not just a great pool table, but to kit out a number of rooms as a fitting tribute to Danny's courage and his inspiration to other young people suffering from cancer. |
