Helping Adolescents at the Marsden (H.A.M.)

Danny's cancer was a rare cancer normally only seen in children under ten years old.  Because of this, he needed to be treated by the oncology team in the children's unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton, Surrey.
Unfortunately, this unit did not really cater for teenagers and young adults, and whilst Danny was in hospital he learnt that the Teenage Cancer Trust was in talks with the Marsden to build a unit specifically designed for young people aged 14-25.  He said that he'd love to raise money to get a pool table for this new unit.
So, a group of local friends and their families got together to raise money to buy a pool table for the new TCT unit when it was built.  They called themselves the H.A.M. Fundraisers, and started off with a sponsored 16-mile cycle ride. This raised about £2,000.  Dan was thrilled at the thought of having a fab pool table at the hospital.
The next fundraising effort was a ball in September 2004, but Dan passed away the month before, and the speech he'd planned to make at this ball was given by his sister Jenna.  H.A.M. raised about £20,000 on this night alone!  Now we're looking at more than a pool table for the youngsters in the hospital!
At the end of January 2005 H.A.M. learnt that the Royal Marsden will be having a TCT unit at their Sutton site, but a number of hurdles still have to be overcome before the go-ahead can be given, but when it is, this will take about 18 months to build.  In the meantime, H.A.M. has paid for the refurbishment of the tiny adolescent room which is currently in the children's unit for use by the over 12's.  In addition H.A.M. have bought new flat screen TVs with DVD players and portable Playstations for the patients in the High Dependency Unit in the Royal Marsden in London and
digital radios for the Robert Tiffany ward in the Royal Marsden Sutton. By the time the TCT unit is built, H.A.M. will have held more balls, and thanks to the many donations and fundraising efforts made by Dan's many many friends, we hope to be able to provide not just a great pool table, but to kit out a number of rooms as a fitting tribute to Danny's courage and his inspiration to other young people suffering from cancer.
